Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut38

When Captain Cook first opened a few months ago, I received a number of messages recommending that I go try the place. I will be honest and tell you that I was not intrigued at all seeing a childish name and logo. I happened to be in the area last week and though why not give it a try and see what the fuss is all about. All I can say is that I was proven wrong. Happily so.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut35

Captain Cook is a new concept in town, offering what they call ‘superfoods’ at very affordable prices. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Beirut, facing the Saraya and the United Nations offices, this small eatery has a lot to offer.

Captain Cook is the pioneer in offering Superfoods Cuisine in Lebanon where you can be sure to receive a clean hygienic service according to the GHP (Good Hygienic Practices) standard.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut33

Superfood is a marketing term used to describe foods with supposed health benefits. A non-medical term popularized in the media to refer to foods that can have health-promoting properties such as reducing one’s risk of disease or improving any aspect of physical or emotional health. So-called superfoods may have an unusually high content of antioxidants, vitamins, or other nutrients.

Like superheroes swooping in to save the day, Superfoods are those that rescue our bodies from illness, provide us with healthier and thinner bodies and moral functions. Captain Cook is the superhero chef whose special power is to mix Superfoods to serve you deliciously empowering natural meals.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut05

Superfoods used in Captain Cook menu: Quinoa, Blueberries, Broccoli, Pommegranate, Artichokes, Asparagus, Basil, Walnut, Flax seeds, Black seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Spinach, Salmon, Avocado, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Olive oil, Rosemary, Aneth, Carrots, Green tea

Each meal can help you with one of the following: Heart, Immunity, Brain memory, Skin, Blood Pressure, Bones, Liver, Vision, Anti inflammatory, Cholesterol, Anti Cancer.

The place:
  • The place is small with no tables but a bar that can seat up to 9 guests
  • A small cube with a cashier standing at the end
  • Super hero posters decorate the walls giving a childish look to the place
  • Red paper placemats are preset on the bar with a bizarrely looking fork and knife
  • Red walls to blend with the original logo
  • Look up for the big Captain Cook logo behind the counter
  • Don’t expect much, the place is intended to sell for deliveries and take away. No fancy decoration or relaxing seating

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut20

Good to know before we start:
  • Delivery is the main business so don’t judge after seeing the place
  • Eat at lunch since Captain cook closes for dinner
  • Healthy and filled with vitamins, the meals will boost your day
  • Captain cook proposes food to boost the body and mind
  • Usually, restaurants have one or two special items on the menu. The concept behind Captain Cook is to offer a complete menu that is special and tailored for your benefit
  • Prices are cheap… really cheap. The strategy is to have a lower profit but be affordable to a larger number of customers

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut38

The menu sections:
  • Breakfast
  • Starters
  • Salads
  • Burgers
  • Pizza
  • Sandwiches
  • Pasta
  • Platters desserts
  • Beverages
I had for lunch:
  • Iron Claws: Crab, Pomegranate, seeds, avocado, iceberg lettuce, cherry tomato, black pepper, mango, basil, pumpkin seeds and cocktail sauce. All of this salad you see below for only 6,750L.L. Tasty fresh and filled with rich ingredients and pleasant textures. If you want to enjoy a rich and delicious salad at a very affordable price, that is the one. The softness of the crabs, avocados that melt like butter under you teeth, the crunchiness of the lettuce and it doesn’t stop here. Hint of sweetness generated by the mango followed by cracking sounds of the seeds mix that makes all the difference. Yes, all of that as I already mentioned for 6,750L.L. A generous fulfilling portion.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut09

  • Swiss Mushroom Burger: Soft sesame bun, Edam cheese, tomato, spinach. It has a hint of sweetness. A big bun, juicy meat, premium cheese and spinach for only 6,000L.L.  You will enjoy this juicy burger and its hint of sweetness with a smile. A homemade feel and premium ingredients creating an interesting preparation with no sophistication whatsoever. Two thumbs up guys.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut39

  • Fabulous French Fries: These are really nice. The normal frozen fries covered with cheddar cheese, mixed peppers, extra virgin olive oil, tomato, basil 4,500L.L. Fries like you have never tasted before. The simple normal fries covered with a colorful mix of vegetables makes the plate look nice as well as adds the needed flavors. Peppers, tomato, basil and olive oil would remove the sense of guilt that may arouse while eating fries.

Captain_Cook_Restaurant_Beirut37

Adding to the order a Pepsi, I only paid 18,000L.L. I left half the plates full. For 18,000LL the order can feed two people.
The pluses:
  • Color coded menu with notes showing how each meal is good for your body
  • The prices are very low and affordable
  • The plates are all generously filled
  • THe manager is always around to answer all your questions with the utmost professionalism
The minuses:
  • Parking is not easy and may be hard to find. You would have to park more than 200meters away
  • The place is not the best you would expect. It definitely needs a full refurbishment
If you work around the Beirut area, I would definitely recommend that you order from Captain Cook, where good food, healthy eating and great prices meet. I was positively surprised.

For the Love of Burgers… The Marky’s Revolution

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon13

Yes… Back to Marky’s for even more exquisite burgers… I missed this place and what it offers… I was in burger heaven:  An upscale version of Marky’s  popular Poutine along side five other newly introduced burgers followed with a piece of homemade baked cheesecake. I wish you all visited with me to really understand what I felt…

Poutine du Quebec  I love the simplicity of the cheese that feels like tofu, with a richness that appears when mixed with the sauce. Crunchy homemade fries covered with a mix of well done onion cubes, sautéed hotdogs, grilled bacon and cooked tiny fresh mushroom bits. What a plate! A rich blend of premium ingredients that melts like butter under your teeth adding to that the slight crunch of the onions, each cooked separately to perfection then mixed together to make this impetuous meal.

Poutine is a common Canadian dish (originally from Quebec), made with French fries, topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Sometimes additional ingredients are added. This fast food dish is found across Canada (and is also found in some places in the Northern United States), although it is still exotic enough there to sometimes need describing. It is sold by national and international fast food chains, in small “greasy spoon” type diners and pubs, as well as by roadside chip wagons. International chains like McDonald’s, KFC, and Burger King also sell mass-produced poutine in Canada. Poutine may also contain other ingredients such as bacon, beef, pulled pork, lamb, lobster meat, shrimp, rabbit confit, caviar, and truffles.

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon11

Patati Patata Burger: This is like nothing before… Really! Two rost potato patties crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside hosting a rich fried potato like vermicelli filled with Marky’s signature meat, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. If you want to taste something special, that is it. Beware of its oiliness and be prepared for it. Since it’s not yet launched, I’m confident that Marky’s will be improving this issue before the launch

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon24

Oklahoma Burger: A simple burger that might look deceiving until you bite into it. What! What the heck happened to my eyes? They are closing alone! I’m moaning uncontrollably! Juicy with a watery freshness. A slight crunch of the onions followed by a tasty caramelized and sweet taste accompanies the same perfectly cooked meat, cheddar cheese and american pickles. The fusion of meat, pepper, onions, crunchiness and softness will really make you smile. That’s not a simple burger but a gourmet creation

The famous fried onion burger in Oklahoma started in the early 1900’s. During the depression, meat prices were high, as a way to beef up their patties a local place called the Hamburger Inn in El Reno started adding a handful of thinly-sliced white onions to a smaller meat patty as it cooked on the griddle. Before turning the patty, the onions would get pressed into the meat with a spatula. The addition of the onions added a ton of flavor, and poof, just like that an El Reno food tradition was born.

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon25

Juicy Lucy Burger: That’s not a burger for the faint hearted! Imagine 70 additional grams (200g meat) of marky’s one of kind meat filled with three kinds of American cheese. When you expect awesomeness for a cheese at heart this is what you should order. A generously well packed party with rich meat. In this carnival of flavors, you tend to forget about the bun. A big bun filled with yeast as air bubbles that collapses under your fingers to access your mouth in style and melt like butter. What a day! OMG!

Juicy Lucy is a cheeseburger that has the cheese inside the meat patty rather than on top. A piece of cheese is surrounded by raw meat and cooked until it melts, resulting in a molten core of cheese within the patty. This scalding hot cheese tends to gush out at the first bite, so servers frequently warn patrons to let the burger cool for a few minutes before consumption to avoid injury.

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon26

OMG Burger: Yes, when you see it you can’t but say “Oh My God”! It is “the” burger that’s even tastier and definitely heavier than the Big Boy. The complete burger that has it all. Fully loaded witth ingredients: Bun, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese, meat, bacon, potato, cheese, meat, mustard, ketchup, bun. The two important and unique ingredients are the patati patata crunchy slice and the special bacon. Two long bacon slices, worked into a shear style (tressé) and grilled slowly to become crunchy. The way it’s worked into itself make it retain its position on the meat without sliding out after each bite.

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon21

Poutine Burger: Look at the rich ingredients from top to toe: “Bun, mayonnaise, oak leaf lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickles, meat, gravy, cheese curls, patati patata, sautéed mushrooms, beef hotdogs, onions, ketchup, mustard.” A thin layer of bread, especially created for Marky’s by a local bakery, is covered with a layer of mayonnaise. Under it is a clean green leaf of European lettuce, a 2mm tomato slice, three homemade American pickles slices, a juicy patty followed by Marky’s signature homemade poutine and gravy. Making this burger even more unique is the meat poutine mix of onions, bacon, hotdog and mushrooms. Softening the lower bun is a thin layer of ketchup and mustard. Sweetness, crunchiness, flavors and an explosion of a hundred ingredients all caress smoothly your palate. That’s a heavy deal!

Marky_Burgers_Mkalles_Lebanon23

After tasting the Poutine burger, I’m not sure which one I like more, this or the OMG?

You might ask:

  • Am I exaggerating? No
  • Are the burgers that good? Yes
  • Are Marky’s preparations that sophisticated and unique? Go see for yourself and tell me.

Marky’s burgers can’t be compared to anyone out there. Don’t expect to eat a Double Whopper from Burger King, or a burger from the Classic Burger Joint, it surely is not a Shake Shack burger and definitely far from being a Brgr & Co… It’s simply a “Marky’s”.

For you to know exactly what I am talking about, try them and let me know…

One Burger Bite, More than Twenty Different Flavors

As its name suggests, Burger Bites is a popular place where small burger bites are served. Located right after Monot Theater, this tiny place has a lot of potential, but some details must be attended to immediately. As a first impression, it was bad. I was welcomed by an overwhelming smell of frying oil as the music played in the background is a perfect recipe for a pounding headache. Luckily, the food was good…

Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut47

Located in the vibrant Monot area, Burger Bites offers mouthwatering mini burgers made from top grade beef, ground daily on spot in the kitchen. Eating a burger is fulfilling, but you only get to taste one item on the menu. Imagine a place where you can eat many different delicious burgers instead of this one burger. A place where you can choose, from a variety of flavors, the burger that suits you best. A place where a burger is not a huge meal, but rather, a bite.

The concept is simple: choose between one of 14 meat burgers, 5 chicken bites, 2 fish bites and 3 vegetarian bites. The burger boat -if you order eight-, gets you the fries for free. Burgers have a price range of 4,000L.L-6,000L.L.
Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut45
The place described:
  • A small place along the Monot street
  • As you enter, an open kitchen behind the bar welcomes you
  • Grey concrete floor
  • A glass facade allows natural daylight to enter
  • A long mirror on the right makes the place look twice as big. A long bench under it supports it
  • The left wall is decorated with a TV and some shelves with ketchup bottles, plants and miniature cars
  • Ten lights pending from the ceiling
  • My favorite items include the design wood chairs with burgundy leather cushions

Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut51

The menu includes:
  • Beef bites
  • Side orders
  • Chicken bites
  • Fish bites
  • Vegetarian bites
  • Add-ons
  • Desserts
  • Drinks

Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut50

We ordered:
  • Halloumi Skewers: Every skewer hosts three cubes of halloumi along two cherry tomatoes, grilled and covered with balsamic vinegar
  • Cherry Cheese Bite: Emmental, cherry jam, BBQ sauce
  • Pineapple Bite: Pineapple, bacon, BBQ sauce. Grilled pineapple is good
  • Brie bite: Brie, lettuce, tomato, cocktail sauce. Meat quality is good
  • I’m So Blue Bite: Blue cheese, lettuce, pickles, cocktail sauce
  • Beef Mozzarella Bite: Mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, pickles, BB sauce
  • English Breakfast Bite: Quail egg, tomato, onions, kebab sauce
  • Mushroom Cheese Bite: Emmental, tomato, onion, mushrooms, BBQ sauce
  • Baconator Bite: Onions, 3 slices of bacon, BBQ sauce

The tasting experience:

  • To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting it to be that good
  • The meat quality is good. Exactly what you would expect from a burger bite
  • The bread is tender and easily chewable leaving place for the inner ingredients to be appreciated
  • The meat size is proportional to the bun
  • Using brie and blue cheese in a burger is a great idea. The flavors of these bites are really nice
  • The English breakfast is one of my favorites. How nice it is to see i mini egg inside a mini burger and feel its taste
  • The Pineapple is not to be missed
  • The mozzarella layer is crispy on the sides and non oily. Enjoyable
  • Cherry and its sweetness is extraordinary. Bravo

Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut52

Burger Bites’ might look small but they do hide magical flavors. I enjoyed each and every one of these in style and recommend you do so. 50g in each means three would be enough for a meal… but you might not be able to resist ordering eight bites for yourself. They are addictive…
The exquisite desserts:
Choco Bite: Nutella with banana, pineapple or cherry jam. Ice cream is a possibility as well: How nice! Thinking that the experience would end with the burger bites, but trust me the dessert are even better. These tiny sweet bites are exactly like I love them: The same bun is layered with Nutella, spiced up with crushed nuts and then covered with banana or pineapple. This is really tasty. A generous bite I enjoyed with a smile.
Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut39
I liked at Burger Bites:
  • The quality of the meat is very good
  • The fries, cut like potato chips are innovative and tasty
  • The proportionality of the ingredients constituting the burger

Yumi_Sushi_Japanese_Beirut38

I would change:
  • The sauce cocktail, the main ingredient everywhere should be stronger, more prominent with more character. The taste is fade or even nonexistent
  • Use better quality of bacon. The one we had today feels like beef
  • Work more on the hygiene and cleanliness: The place is ridiculously left unattended to
  • Fix the bar display: Remove the plastic cutlery storage, 961 beer boxes… Nothing’s appealing or looks mouthwatering. Learn from Classic Burger Joint’s display
  • Wet napkins and napkins should better be branded
Disturbing things:
  • The smell of frying/cooked oil in the restaurant is unbearable
  • The music is unacceptable
  • Service is mediocre

The concept and burgers are just great. The place can become a national success if only they refresh and change the place upside while focusing on the important details that matter to clients.  I congratulate you on the burger quality.

Dine-In at Pizza Hut: Tasting Four Different Crusts

I bet you’re be asking  yourselves, “what took him to this place?” after reading the title…Well, I remember the hype behind Pizza Hut years ago, before the country became saturated with restaurants and new concepts. I used to look forward going there with a bunch of my friends, especially on the weekend. The fad slowed down… for one reason or another, but it’s definitely not because the quality of food has lessened. On the contrary… I like their pizza… I may not be fond of the place itself, but their pizza is something to consider…
Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon04
Sometimes you just crave the typical American style pizza. Pizza Hut, Domino’s or Papa John’s are just few remaining places that offer them. Accompanied by three of my friends, I decided to pay Pizza Hut a visit. I went to the branch in the area where I live, Mazraat Yachouh, which has been here for decades. This restaurant was the first to open in the area that has become a busy business hub today.
Is Pizza Hut still good? The answer is yes.
Unfortunately, the restaurant feels like a haunted place but eating a Pizza in-house is much better than having it delivered home. Today’s experience was really good and felt close to the ones I have had in the US.
The place described:
  • Dimmed and dark, the place feels like a haunted house
  • Dark tiles cover the floor
  • Dark wooden chairs with dark blue leather cushions are supposed to decorate the place
  • Colorful but dull tables have different squares on (light red, purple, green)
  • Glass separators between tables give more privacy to the groups
  • A light music plays in the background
  • Columns are covered in wood and walls are painted in yellow and pink
  • A long bench on the right side of the restaurant follows the wall
  • Glass facades offer a view on the main road
  • An open kitchen that’s supposed to be fresh looks dark and scary
  • Blue and white ceiling
  • A dimmed and disturbing ambiance

Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon35

Before going in to the tasting adventure, let me assure you that all pizzas served at Pizza Hut are rich and generously filled with premium ingredients. Before deciding to write this review, I ordered pizza from them over five times lately, and every time it was good and tasty.

Let us try the different Pizza Hut crusts:
  • Thin’n’ Crispy: The original crust baked to a thin, crispy crunch since 1958

This pizza is the one you’ll feel the ingredients the most. If you want to feel the pepperoni or the vegetables, order this dough. Thin and light, this crust is close to that served in Italian restaurants around town. This is the only pizza served on a wooden serving pan

Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon34

  • Pan: Pan baked to golden perfection. Soft on the inside, crispy on the out, incredibly delicious

This is my second favorite crust and a great Pizza. The Pan is cooked in the oven in a metallic plate covered in oil. The dough absorbs the oil giving the bottom a crunchy feel but unfortunately an oily finish. The dough on another hand is fluffy and airy, light and enjoyable. A thin slight crunch felt on the sides and at the bottom with an inner filling that is so light that you’ll feel each and everyone of the ingredients covering the pizza. I loved the Pan pizza.

Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon30

  • Stuffed crust: A ring of soft melted cheese is baked into the crust of this delicious pizza base

The stuffed crust is one of Pizza Hut’s best. Thin in its middle and filled with cheese on the sides, you will eat it as is with love. I loved the golden finish of the sides filled with rich cheese. There is not crunchiness around here. Remember that 4,000L.L are added to this pizza

Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon28

  • Traditional (Italian crust): Traditional style pizza crust hand stretched to create the perfect, not too thick and not too thin crust

This pizza was our least favorite and far from being an Italian classic. What is called Traditional should be an American traditional. Too thick and too chewy, I felt like I was eating a French baguette flattened on the table. 70% bread and 30% filling, the dough spoils the original taste of the pizza. Rich and generously filled, I would definitely order a different crust to enjoy my pizza better.

Pizza_Hut_Dine_In_Lebanon32

The plus: All pizzas are served on plastic serving plates filled with balls making the pizza float in the air keeping it fresh.
I didn’t enjoy the place at all even though the waitress was smiling and welcoming but I loved the pizzas. I really missed eating something that fresh, that hot and that generous. If you forgot about Pizza Hut, you might want to consider it again.

Pizza Hut is an American restaurant chain and international franchise that offers different styles of pizza along with side dishes including salad, pasta, buffalo wings, breadsticks, garlic bread and desserts. Corporately known as Pizza Hut, Inc., it is a subsidiary of Yum! Meet Afif: Ambaratouriyet el Lahme Beajin, Hrajel

There are so many places in Lebanon that offer amazingly delicious bites – some you know, some you’ll get to know and some you’ll remember. Starting a new series, “Discovering the Hidden Street Food Gems of Lebanon”, I welcome you to travel with me around our beloved country to discover the tastiest items around…

If you’re a ski lover or happen to live in the Kesrerwan area, you’ll definitely know this one…

Lahme_Beajine_Hrajel_NoGarlicNoOnions01

I thought starting with Afif would be a good way to introduce this new series. His humor, good food and humble attitude all combined – make this man a perfect choice.

Who’s Afif? He’s the man who makes the best lahem baajine and homemade Laban in town. Where? His place is called Mar Charbel Bakery or better yet known by “Ambaratouriyet el Lahme Beajine”, located just a few meters away from the Hrajel roundabout. This small eatery is owned and managed by Afif Zgheib and there to help him is his younger brother.

Lahme_Beajine_Hrajel_NoGarlicNoOnions15

Lahmacun also lahmajun is a round, thin piece of dough topped with minced meat and minced vegetables and herbs including onions, tomatoes and parsley, then baked. Lahmacun is often served sprinkled with lemon juice and wrapped around vegetables, including pickles, tomatoes, peppers and onions.

As soon as you enter the eatery, Afif shouts out welcoming you into his humble place. He treats you like he’s known you a long time, or that you’re an accustomed customer… He then asks you to remind him of your family name before he starts giving you a detailed report about your roots and ancestors.

From time to time, when the bakery gets too busy, he shouts out to Azar, his right man, to help him welcome the guests: “Ra7eb bel jamahir ya Azar”.

Here, Azar, with a strong mountaineer voice and accent shouts saying: “Ahla bel jami3, ahla, ahla”…

Lahme_Beajine_Hrajel_NoGarlicNoOnions30

Good food, welcoming, humble, fresh homemade laban and some entertainment… The simplicity of the Zgheib brothers will definitely make you start your day with a smile …

Just imagine a thin and crunchy crust, covered with local fresh meat from the village and enjoyed with homemade yogurt “Laben”. Yes, it’s pronounced “Laben” … the Keserwani way.

Sahtein.

Lahme_Beajine_Hrajel_NoGarlicNoOnions23

Next time you’re going up to Mzaar Kfardebian, make it a point to pass by Afif. It’s a discovery indeed.

(Watch the Video to live the experience with Afif)

PS: I enjoyed Afif’s character so much that I forgot to mention the lack of hygiene in this place. Even though very dirty, I don’t recall or heard about anyone getting poisoned after eating at Afif. As he says: “3al barake!”

Thank you to my friend Elie Gemayel for helping with the video shooting and editing

Snack Le Gourmet: Bickfaya’s Famous Chicken Sandwich

One of the country’s tastiest chicken sandwiches is found at Le Gourmet in Bickfaya, El Metn. If you live around the area, there’s no way you don’t know about Le Gourmet’s fine chicken sandwiches, unless you’ve been hiding under a stone since 1976.  Reach Bickfaya roundabout and find Le Gourmet immediately to your right…  and taste the best chicken sandwiches…

Le_Gourmet_Chicken_Bickfaya_NoGarlicNoOnions05

Abdallah Hajj Boutros, the owner, personally rolls the sandwiches. His mother helps him at the cashier. Order your sandwich and see it done in minutes. Watch the video we’ve prepared and get hungry….

Le Gourmet has been known for its simple, yet consistent and tasty chicken sandwiches. They were the first to introduce chicken sandwiches using the famous french bread, instead of the Lebanese pita bread. This was how they started the trend that spread ‘viral’ around town. Back then viral meant word of mouth…. people came to try Le Gourmet’s simple chicken sandwiches – French bread, a generous quantitity of chicken, pickles and homemade garlic paste. Yum.

The menu:

  • Whole grilled Chicken 18,000L.L
  • Any sandwich 6,000L.L
  • A box of garlic paste 3,000L.L
  • A box of hummus 3,000L.L
  • A box of pickles 3,000L.L

The sandwiches choices:

  • Chicken
  • Chicken lover
  • Chich Tawouk
  • Sanasel
  • Nkha3
  • Thongue
  • T7al
  • Makanek
  • Roastbeef
  • Kafta
  • Soujok
  • Cheese & Ham

Le_Gourmet_Chicken_Bickfaya_NoGarlicNoOnions12

I personally order those chicken sandwiches with mayonnaise instead of garlic and enjoy them just the same. If you happen to pass by the area, Le Gourmet is your address. A snack that opens for lunch only until the quantity expires. The place is clean and professionally handled with care.

Meet Abou el Abed: Gemmayze’s Famous Kaak and Picon Seller

Abou_Abed_Kaak_Gemmayze_Beirut02
There are moments in life you just feel you want to let go, pull your sleeves up high and plunge into someone else’s job, life, routine… and see how things are on the other side. Today was one of those days. I left the clinic and got into the car with my friend Elie and drove around the city… I have heard of this old man called Abou el Abed… no not the guy behind the famous Lebanese jokes, but a man who walks the streets of Beirut pushing his Kaak trolly around. His routine is clear and his accustomed clients wait for him by the minute, if not the second, to enjoy one of his richly prepared kaak. Some like it plain, others with Picon cheese, thyme and sumac, Akawi cheese… whatever your preference be sure it’s going to be tasty…
I have been searching for this man for around a month now and finally found him. As we drove around Gemmayze area and asked about Abou el Abed everyone knew who I was talking about. He’s famous around here!

Wearing a traditional Lebanese red tarboosh, traditionally red costume with his name in gold thread written across his chest, he stands confidently behind his trolley on Rue Pasteur facing Bank Audi, preparing a round juicy kaak followed by another. He reminded me of the actual character of Aboul El Abed with the way he’s dressed… But surely he’s a man of distinct character.

Abou_Abed_Kaak_Gemmayze_Beirut14
I was so excited to have found him. I came closer and met him… introduced myself and with a smile he welcomes me into his humble world. With lines of despair on his face, Aboul el Abed does not wipe his smile from his face… I felt close to him… and wanted to be that humble man for a day… he agreed and gave me a tarboosh to wear. I helped him push the trolly around, I prepared some of the kaak’s for customers… and the best part was being able to blow the horns and shouting out kaak kaak…
Abou_Abed_Kaak_Gemmayze_Beirut04
I learned a lot from this man… The secret behind his success is simple: “Passion and authenticity” is what this man abides by… and has been doing so for the past 30 years. With a big smile on his face, he blows his horns and calls out kaak kaak and watches his clients come closer… everyday… he knows them by name and knows exactly how they like their kaaks prepared…
At 8am every morning Abul Abed fills his trolly with 140 kaaks and walks around Gemmayze until 1pm, he then continues up to Sodeco until the early hours of the afternoon!

Abou_Abed_Kaak_Gemmayze_Beirut08

Choose a kaaka or let Abul Abed do it for you before it is preheated in his oven. A few minutes afterwards he puts it on a stainless box. Cuts it open and spreads four Picon pieces on it. Zaatar, sumac and here it goes again for another few minutes into the oven to become crunchy. You can ask him to add two more Picon pieces for 500L.L.
Abou_Abed_Kaak_Gemmayze_Beirut09
The secret here is the oven, something that no one else has I believe. A small oven inside his nylon covered trolly makes these kaaks the tastiest  you have ever had.. I’ve eaten kaak but believe me these are special. Not chewy and have that salty aftertaste which I love. Every bite is crunchy and rich. After tasting the signature Picon, I asked Abou el Abed to give me something less conventional. Akawi special mix he says: Akkawi cheese, mozzarella and butter, (a mix he keeps with no refrigeration all day long. Thank God I didn’t get poisoned because I’m planning on having more of them again soon); a generously rich kaak for only 3,000L.L is filled, heated and ready to be devoured.
Words are not enough to describe the experience for sure. I invite you to search look out for Aboul el Abed who says that once you taste his kaaks you will get hooked… and this is something I can personally guarantee… And thanks a special thanks to my friend Elie who captured the memorable experience on video. An Asian Street Food in Paris… I Will Not Visit Again

Le_Francis_Asian_Restaurant_Paris08

I had one of the worst culinary experiences in the French capital to date. I’m not sure where to start and to be honest if I should even start. I wanted to avoid writing this review, but then I thought, NGNO readers deserve to know.

Le Francis or Le Mandarin, yes this restaurant oddly has two names, is located in the 9th District of Paris. Right behind Lafayette is one of those places where a large fridge displays ready made Asian food that are heated for immediate consumption. In here, you will experience the real meaning of street food. No welcoming, no smiles, no efforts, no cleanliness – a simple display of food that are filled into plastic boxes and paid for by weight.

Le_Francis_Asian_Restaurant_Paris15

The fridge different choices:

  • Noodle soup with fish balls
  • Wan tan soup with shrimps raviolis
  • Noodles soup with pork, chicken, meat or duck
  • Sweet and sour pork
  • Sweet and sour chicken
  • Chicken with pineapple
  • Crispy chicken with ginger
  • Pork spring rolls
  • Ravioli dumplings
  • Pork dumplings
  • Shrimps skewers
  • Salt and pepper shrimps
  • Chinese nougat
  • Ginger
  • Coco ball dessert
  • Spring rolls (Vegetarian, Shrimp, Chicken, Pork)
  • Vegetables fried rice
  • Chopped vegetables
  • Tofu in vegetables
  • Thai beef

Le_Francis_Asian_Restaurant_Paris19

The food:

  • Oily
  • Not fresh
  • Over salty
  • Not Tasty
  • You fill your stomach with tasteless calories followed by a feeling of guilt

Le_Francis_Asian_Restaurant_Paris21

The good:

  • Summer rolls are generous and good
  • The rice is good

The bad:

  • Staff is rude and unwelcoming
  • The place looks and feels dirty
  • Photos are not allowed and I understand why. They want to avoid showing the dirtiness of the place over the net
  • To be able to pay by international credit cards, your bill should be a minimum of 15euros
  • The food lacks taste and finesse. Just oily ingredients mixed together

Pay attention: If you try using your phone to take pictures, you will be treated as a felon by the staff

So, I tell you again, this is not my usual review, but a chance to vent out and share the tasteless culinary adventure I had experienced to help you avoid such an encounter the next time you’re in Paris.

Lunch at Work? Captain Cook is Tasty, Generous and Affordable

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon30

I’ve already been to Captain Cook a couple months ago and decided to pass by again to discover a wider choice of those “Superfoods” that can help my body all by being tasty and fulfilling at the same time.

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon06

Superfoods used in Captain Cook menu: Quinoa, Blueberries, Broccoli, Pommegranate, Artichokes, Asparagus, Basil, Walnut, Flax seeds, Black seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Spinach, Salmon, Avocado, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Olive oil, Rosemary, Aneth, Carrots, Green tea

Each meal can help you with one of the following: Heart, Immunity, Brain memory, Skin, Blood Pressure, Bones, Liver, Vision, Anti inflammatory, Cholesterol, Anti Cancer.

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon10

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon02

The menu sections:

  • Breakfast
  • Starters
  • Salads
  • Burgers
  • Pizza
  • Sandwiches
  • Pasta
  • Platters desserts
  • Beverages

We had for lunch today:

  • Raphaiello Pasta 12,000L.L: (Tagliatelle pasta, spinach, broccoli, gorgonzola, cheese, special cream sauce, cherry tomato, parmesan cheese, chicken cubes) A rich and generous combination of ingredients that feel and look like a homemade plate. Cherry tomatoes cut in half, crunchy fresh broccoli and chicken cubes all served very hot with cheese on top. The pasta is very good and full of interesting flavors. I really enjoyed it. Chicken is juicy, creamy, light and adequately salted. The pepper aftertaste is interesting. Eat it as quickly as you can since the pasta continues cooking in its sauce

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon33

  • Steak holder sandwich 8,250L.L: (Beef brochette, onion, red pepper, creamy cheese, special steak sauce, extra virgin olive oil, edam cheese, tomato, submarine bread) Inside one of the softest sandwich buns available in town is a rich filling that made me smile. A non chewy but tender meat mixed with a lemony flavor, a BBQ sauce and a rich choice of vegetables. I loved the sesame covering the bun that make a big difference in taste. My friend and I couldn’t but look at each other meaning to say that the sandwich is great

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon15

  • The Captain Burger 7,500L.L: (Burger meat, burger bun, avocado, BBQ special sauce, cheddar cheese, tomato, grilled onions, iceberg lettuce, sautéed mushroom, fried egg) YES! all of this for only 5$: A thick juicy meat topped with a soft and tender avocado and non oily eggs all combined under one tender bun like no other. To add even more flavor and finesse to this perfect street burger, fresh mushrooms and crunchy grilled onions mixed with the special sauce would really let you say yum. Different interesting textures that are more than perfect for its low price. You get a better value than any other 10$ burger around the city. For lunch at work, I do recommend it specially that its not fatty and non oily

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon22

  • The super wedges are great 5,250L.L: (Wedges potato, mozzarella cheese, paprika, rosemary, spinach, special cocktail sauce) Those wedges are as good as Captain cook’s French fries. To start with, the plate is nice to look at with its beautiful colors and cheese covering it. The wedges on another hand are served hot, crunchy and perfectly cooked. The seasoning adds finesse and flavorings that will make you want to finish all the plate. Those are one of the few wedges in town without garlic powder topping

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon31

The best thing about Captain Cook’s food is that all plates are generous and fulfilling, the prices are the lowest in this country -hoping that they stay that way- and none have a side effect afterwards. Eat and continue working with a smile.

The pluses:

  • Color coded menu with notes showing how each meal is good for your body
  • You eat what’s written on the menu with no surprises and hidden ingredients
  • The prices are very low and affordable
  • The plates are all generously filled

Captain_Cook_Superfoods_Lebanon32

The minuses:
  • Parking is not easy and may be hard to find. You would have to park more than 200meters away
  • The place is not the best you would expect. It definitely needs a full refurbishment
  • Get your food delivered, it’s definitely better than dining in

I will change:

  • Meat and pasta should be cooked a bit less taking into consideration that items continue their cooking process while being delivered

If you work around the Beirut area, I would definitely recommend that you order from Captain Cook, where good food, healthy eating and great prices meet. I was positively surprised one more time.

Fat Burger… I Am Not Sure This is Even Called a Burger

$

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre26

The story is all wrong! Check their website and you will be welcomed with this statement: “In 1952, Lovie Yancey created something unique. A culture. A phenomenon, if you will. She created the biggest, juiciest hamburgers anyone had ever seen. So obviously, there was only one name for them – Fatburger.”

Biggest? Juiciest? Phenomenon? This is not what I experienced at all.

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre12

Fatburger which is one of USA’s famous international burger chains has landed in Lebanon opening its first branch in Beirut City Centre. I personally never felt like trying it maybe its name scared me and was not sure what they meant by it… FatBurger? “eat and get fat?” I happened to be at the mall, my friend and I decided to give it a try.

Nestled in the food court of the BCC, Fat Burger has a window, like all the others around, to order and have a seat in the common middle area.

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre04

The place:
  • The restaurant has an overall black finish
  • The logo is printed on a long black wall behind a row of red sofas and individual square tables
  • The menu is displayed over the counter
  • The open kitchen is clean allowing you to see what’s cooking inside
  • A coke draft dispenser stands behind the cashier

So we approached the cashier to learn more about the concept; I asked: “Good evening Miss, why is it named FatBurger? Is it because it wwill make me gain weight?”

Not knowing much about the company’s history, she replied by saying that they have the biggest meat, this is why they are called fat.

“Fine,” I replied, “what’s the meat weight?”

“I don’t know,” she answered.

Anyway, we continued browsing the menu to understand what’s it all about. The menu is divided into a couple of simple sections displayed in a complicated way. A double cheese burger is prices at 14,000L.L without any fries or coke.

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre21

The menu:

  • Single, double, triple or quad
  • Chicken sandwich
  • Turkey burger
  • Veggie Burger
  • Add-ons
  • Sides and more
  • Speciality burgers
  • Make it a meal
  • Kid’s meal
  • Milkshakes and drinks

The burgers, even though are pictured with two thick and juicy pieces of cheese, actually come without the cheese. You can add egg, cheese, “beef” bacon or chili for 1,500L.L each

We ordered, tasted and couldn’t eat:

  • Double Fatburger (Double meat, bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, relish, mustard). Inside a stale bun is a dry non juicy piece of meat with an unpleasant commercial aftertaste. The overall dryness of the burger makes it hard to swallow. Imagine a dry sponge fitted with a super dry meat and decorated with crunchy vegetables. The sauce is not even felt to add taste to the mix. Inedible!

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre34

  • Western BBQ Fatburger (Meat, bun, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion ring, BBQ sauce, relish, mustard). This one is even worse. The same dry and stale bun that’s at least 3 days old.  The dry meat with barbecue sauce leaves an unpleasant taste and aftertaste that sticks to your palate for more than 20 minutes. This is all you feel and taste – BBQ Sauce! To make things even worse, is the sticky, chewy beef bacon that is disgusting. I don’t even want to remember the feeling if this cheap condiment

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre26

  • Mushroom Cheddar Fatburger (mushroom and cheddar sauce)  – a joke. I would love to propose a game: Buy one of these, close your eyes and eat it. You won’t know what you’re really chewing. A neutral piece of a dry mix of something supposed to be food. Again, dry meat, dry bun and tasteless filling. It doesn’t even look appetizing

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre28

  • Fatfries: Nothing to write home about.

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre29

  • Skinny fries: Some pieces are cold, others are warm. Some are overcooked and others are undercooked. Unacceptable

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre22

We left the tray as is, looking for something to eat elsewhere…

I liked:

  • Free Coke refill

The bad:

  • The staff doesn’t seem to know much about the brand
  • The pictures are wrong
  • The menu displayed on the international website has nothing to do with what our local franchise is offering. On the website, burgers are S,M,L,XL,XXL and the BBQ and Mushroom don’t exist
  • The food is unacceptable and tasteless

Fatburger_Beirut_City_Centre35

After today’s experience, I realized how proud I am of our local diners. This is an opportunity for me to congratulate our local diners and other burger joints for giving Lebanon some of the best burgers the world can offer.

PS: I wonder if the mother company of Fat Burger knows about the quality their branch is serving in our country. I’ve been to FatBurger in Las Vegas four years ago and the experience was way different…

Furn El Sabaya: Innovative Homemade Wonders

$

In the heart of Amchit, a town situated between Byblos and Batroun is a small bakery that’s twenty one years old… It’s not just any bakery but one that offers all things unique. This is a story of the Zgheib family, a united group of women who wake up daily with one single aim: “Preach the best of Amchit’s culinary heritage.” I know that this, is not a new place, but after trying their tasty wonders I realized how much I have missed in my life not having tried it before… It’s worth talking about Al Sabaya.

Al Sabaya have joint forces opening a small shop under their own house. You will be served the food they eat at home. Everything all prepared with the utmost attention to perfection and hygiene.
With my friend Nagi, we visited Al Sabaya to taste their signature item, “Mwara2et Sekkar”. I was expecting to eat a simple man2oushe but the opposite was the case. I met the women behind this culinary wonder, Lorenza, Martha and Lucy, who all enthusiastically welcomed me as they told me their story. I wish I could have tasted everything in one session, but we had to stick to some of their important items.
The culinary journey started with a Manouché, but not any man2oushe. Made using brown bread and Zaatar without oil, this is a healthy treat. Pay attention; they don’t like the word “diet” in here, but prefer to be referred to these orders as the healthier choice. Afterwards, I asked for a normal one for a comparison,,, followed by a ritual of wonders.
I say ritual,  because every sandwich needs time and dedication. The eggs pizza (ors bayed) or even the awarma galette are breathtaking. Just take your time and enjoy the preparation, the way each is rolled with love and cooked with passion. I was  uncontrollably moaning… I’ve never tasted something that good in my entire life!
Furn_Sabaya_Amchit04

Afterwards, was celebration time: “the mwara2a was on the way”
On a thin dough, double the size of the Manouché, a mix of almonds, walnuts, sugar, orange blossom and rose water is layered. These are the same fillings used to make Atayef.  Take a closer look and discover a  special way of rolling the dough inside out to create what looks like a bicycle wheel… very original.
A thin crust that crumbles under your teeth while the filling caresses your taste buds obliging you to close your eyes and scream WOW!
Nothing will describe my feelings… Not even the video… You have to visit them and feel exactly what I did.

3al Barakeh: Markouk Sandwiches Made With Love

While searching for more unique hidden yummy gems in our country, I remembered Mr. Toufic Faddoul, aka, Al Khal. A humble, positive man who has been offering homemade delicious sandwiches for over twenty years. Trust me this is not a place to miss…

There’s a big center in Mazraat Yachouh, called Au Carrefour. On the lower side of this big center you will find a small a small shop. Clean and simple, 3al Barakeh offers a super varied menu of unique sandwiches like no other. He transformed the known Markouk bread into mouthwatering sandwiches – all produced from scratch in his kitchens. You name it from labneh, zaatar, kaftan, eggs, awarma, tuna, kechek, chocolate, potato, soujok, cheese and more, be prepared to taste the authentic flavors of the village prepared by the man himself.

Ahla bel chabeb…” Al Khal welcomes me with a smile.

3a;_barakeh_al_Khal_Markouk_Sandwiches_Mazraat_Yachouh15
The formula is simple yet innovative. Al Khal prepares his own markouk bread that he keeps at a certain thickness that doesn’t break if rolled into a sandwich. You have to see how he massages it and caresses it, putting into it some passionate spells… The dough first goes on the saj to be slightly cooked… Afterwards, he fills it with rich ingredients, adds the needed seasoning, some freshly cut vegetables and sends it back and put it back on the saj to be cooked then rolled in style – and the outcome are large 30cm sandwiches that will satisfy any craving.
My favorites include the eggs and potatoes, labneh and vegetables as well as their homemade kafta… Impressive simple sandwiches that are very tasty.
3a;_barakeh_al_Khal_Markouk_Sandwiches_Mazraat_Yachouh16
While waiting to be served, Al Khal’s creates positive a positive ambiance with full energy will. While in there, you’ll automatically forget the day’s stress. And that’s not all. You will hear Al Khal recite some poems -  Arabic poems that are hand written over the walls of his little haven.
When asked what’s the best item found in his humble eatery, he answers: “My lovely visitors are the best thing here.”
“A happy customer makes me happy, while those who come in with a a negative attitude are not welcome here,” he adds.
Be prepared to taste the best of everything, he claims. He’s right – all sandwiches served are unique and different from the ones found around town. If you live far, it’s worth driving all the way up to enjoy his sandwiches.

Words won’t describe the experience. I’ll let you watch the video that will definitely put a smile on your face. Now, meet Al Khal… who creates poems and stories for everyone to enjoy. “Men ghazzi el wa7ad, jasadiyan wa fekriyan

Bakeries Redefined… Zaatar W Zeit’s Stand Alone in Byblos

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast32

After visiting Zaatar W Zeit Zalka with my family last week, I decided to give this place another try before drawing any conclusions. As a small recap, my last experience was unacceptable.  I headed down to another branch just to see how the experience will turn out; I loved it. ZWZ is not a bakery anymore but a revisited diner – a full-fledged restaurant with new expectations. This only means that the actual problem is having an inconsistency in service and attitude between branches… Pay attention guys… don’t let such things affect the reasons why people come to you…

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast02

The last time, I decided not to give it a full review and wrote:

So, our day started at Zaatar W Zeit Zalka. I thought, well this could be a cool place to take my daughter. A place where a variety of foods that children enjoy are served. I discovered for the first time the new wide menu while dining in-house, which I enjoyed. The menu, the variety, the images on the menu, this place has become more restaurant than just a mankoushe spot. Sadly the place was not a cheerful one. It was like Christmas Scrooge passed by here recently; No music, the staff were grim and down, unwelcoming – not a smile was seen. They saw that a kid was with us, but no reaction. No one even gave her some coloring pencils until I asked for some and ended up with one that included used pencils.
Afterwards was ordering time. A kid, sorry but she doesn’t even deserve the title of waitress, approached us for the order. So unpleasant and so unprofessional she was moving her head and mimicking the way spoiled kids talk with their parents. Minutes later, we received the food. I liked and enjoyed the Zaatar light with no oil as well as the turkey and cheese sandwich. On another hand the Lahme Beajine and the cheese and ham were tasteless. It’s unacceptable to serve food on chipped plates. The labneh plate is chipped from all sides like in old Lebanese restaurants.
Anyway the food was not the main issue today but the bad service and unwelcoming ambiance and attitude towards kids. More so, the place was dirty. The floor is covered with breadcrumbs, hair all over the floor and dirt stuffed in the corners, then left searching for something else that will make Enya smile and maybe a coffee for us since we still didn’t have anything to drink.

I went down to their Byblos branch where I enjoyed a nice breakfast with my friend Zeina. I ordered a lot, so just imagine I was there with a bunch of friends. Breakfast on the last day of the year was nice in this stand-alone location where positive vibes seem to naturally flow in the air.

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast05

The place is superb:

  • A stand alone building on the Byblos-Tripoli highway
  • The floor leading to the restaurant is covered with old Lebanese tiles. A great impression
  • Expect to be amazed as you walk inside. A large square space with high ceiling. The use of wood, metal, fabrics, leather, and stainless are here and there to decorate the place. All blend in together beautifully
  • The floor is covered with grey vinyl on one side and wood parquet on the other
  • The walls are all painted in grey
  • White and black lights pending from the ceiling add a touch of style
  • The place is decorated with three pictures covering a large portion of the wall
  • Facing the dining area, a rectangular wall displays food related messages with an interesting typography
  • Facing the entrance you will find a long bar with quick ready made sandwiches to go – “Pret a Manger” style
  • Filling the space are dozens of light wood tables surrounded with wood and white-metallic chairs
  • Two, nicely designed silver chairs add a difference to the mix
  • Facing the highway, a Starbucks style area welcomes you to relax on a few couches
  • The best part are the high glass facades that allows the needed amount of natural light into the place
  • Stainless ducts add an industrial touch

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast07

Zaatar W Zeit new menu:

  • Breakfast (TO share, Manakeesh)
  • Salads
  • Platters
  • Teazers
  • Pizzas
  • Specialty wraps
  • Redefining light
  • Desserts
  • Beverages

We tried today:

  • Halloum w Bacon: (Halloumi cheese and bacon topped with tomatoes and mayo served on sun-dried tomato dough) the one and only sun-dried tomato filled with grilled halloumi cheese. The halloum’s crunchiness and the richness followed by the juiciness of the sauce and freshness of tomatoes is simply superb. My favorite sandwich is now for 11,000L.L

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast28

  • Traditional Pizza: (Tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese, ham and fresh mushrooms) Lebanese style spread of spongy dough with basic pizza ingredients, like most local bakeries. Good for what it is

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast21

  • Labneh Aarouss: (Traditional cream cheese spread on sun-dried tomato dough. Served with tapenade, tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh mint leaves) WOW! A labneh sandwich like no other. As you crunch into the sandwich all the freshness burst into your mouth makes you smile. Smooth labneh, thin sliced cucumbers, mint and olive tapenade with olive oil. Really amazing for a simple labneh sandwich. A hint of sweetness is enjoyed with a mix of ingredients spread on my favorite sun dried tomato mix dough

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast17

  • Oil Free Zaatar: (The same great taste without the guilt. Delicious dried thyme mixed with water and a bit of sesame topped with cucumbers, tomatoes, mint, purslane and rocca) I ordered it again and will do so again and again. Even though without oil and baked on brown dough, this sandwich is juicy and the Zaatar does not give any heartburn. I loved it: healthy and light

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast19

  • Low Cal Turkey and Cheese: (A classic combination of melted cheese topped with slices of turkey, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes seasoned with our light mustard sauce)  A subtle taste of cheese and turkey, delicious sauce and fresh and crunchy vegetables, this meal is great for those looking to enjoy a tasty yet light meal.

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast18

  • Chocolate and Banana Wrap: (Melted hazelnut milk chocolate spread, topped with slices of banana) Nice overall taste but the dough is too chewy and the sandwich doesn’t look like the picture. I enjoyed the generosity and size of the nuts, the softness of the banana and use of Nutella but in order for this wrap to be perfect, a thinner layer of dough should be used and definitely serve it like the picture without cutting it in six pieces.

Zaatar_Zeit_Byblos_Breakfast32

PS: Why are the prices going up so fast that high? The halloum and bacon, for example, was for 9,000L.L just nine months ago. Are we looking for 10$/sandwich by the end of 2014? Are they planning on serving only the rich?

My suggestion: Since the same team that trained Roadster’s staff help with the ZwZ one since you’re one company now. The difference in knowhow and savor faire is tremendous.

Zaatar W Zeit’s new concept, intertwining the best of all worlds into a “Lebanese style” cafe is a big success. You get a Starbucks ambiance, mixed with the Pret A Manger menu and concept, adding to it some unique Lebanese spells… you’ll get a recipe for success: “Zaatar W Zeit”.

I’ll be coming back for a lunch review soon.

Tonino: Surely Not The Best Crepe in Town

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana18
Many of you say that Tonino serves the best crepes in Lebanon? So I took a friend up with me to Broumana to see if it’s true. It was already 1:30pm when we reached Tonino, a creperie and bakery located on the Broumana-Beit Merry highway. As they say, first impressions are everything and this one was not the best. We reached a haunted house with no lights and an unprepared staff who look like they are waiting for some miracle to happen. “Can we have lunch,” I ask.
Tonino_Crepes_Broumana26
We decided to sit outside, grabbed the menus…
The menu:
  • Appetizers
  • Mezza
  • Salads
  • Regular platters
  • Fern
  • Pizzas
  • Grill platters
  • Aarayis
  • Bil foukhara
  • Tayeb
  • Ice cream
  • Mashroub
  • Soukhen
  • Kouhoul
  • Crepes
  • Sweet crepes
Then Freddy approached us to take the order. I asked, “This is my first time here, what are you known for?”
“Pizza and Crepes,” he tells me. So of course we ordered a pizza and a few crepes.
We had for lunch:
  • Zahia Pizza: Salsa, cheese, pepperoni and oregano. The dough is more of a pain au lait bread which has a sweet aftertaste. I tomato was too acidic and the “beef” pepperoni was unpleasant to chew and not tasty at all. I felt like I was eating a hotdog on a piece of sweet bread. The pizza is a no… a big no. When asked about the pepperoni, the waiter proudly said: “it’s beef!”. lol, beef? in Broumana? why?

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana13

  • Valeria Crepe: Cheese, ham and mushrooms. This is an interesting creation served with a pizza slicer. Thin dough, slightly crunchy on the sides and richly filled with ingredients. I didn’t like the fact that the dough taste  is sweet; Too sweet and filled with salty ingredients. Nobody told them that the crepe dough should be salty for savory crepes and sweet for sweet crepes? Tonino uses the same mix for all his crepes

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana14

  • Julia Crepe: White sauce, chicken and mushrooms. Nooooo… I shouted while the chicken slices slide under my teeth. Ouch! Another hard bite of chicken. After thinking that the hard part was to swallow the piece of chicken, comes an unpleasant sticky heavy béchamel stuck on your palate. Neutral and lacking salt and pepper. A huge deceiving no. And they say that this is their best.

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana16

Until now, Tonino is not a place I recommend or would come back to anytime soon. The dough is not crunchy and too sweet and the ingredients are definitely not the best available out there. The ingredients are actually tasteless and need some seasoning as basic as salt and pepper. Let’s see about the desserts…
  • Gonzalo: Chocolate, bananas, nuts. I asked why is it named chocolate while other crepes include Nutella. The waiter, proudly answered: “We use a unique dark chocolate especially prepared for our crepes.” A bite and I stopped. Shady looks at me with a smile: “This one is my favorite, he can’t miss a chocolate crepe”. You should have seen his face expressions when the chocolate touched his tongue. Expect a bitter taste that overtakes on everything else. Yes this unpleasant bitter taste that can’t be swallowed. Very unappetizing, closely to being inedible

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana19

  • Pedro: Hershey’s (cookies and cream). If you like overly sweet things, this is good. Too sweet for my taste but it has a nice crunchy feel inside. I personally didn’t like it but my friend did. Unfortunately, the sweet crepes dough is chewy like Lebanese bread.

Tonino_Crepes_Broumana20

So, you want to know if Tonino has the best crepes? Definitely not! And their pizzas are not special as well. What a deception!

Friitz: Authentic Belgian Fries Since 1825

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut32
A few months ago, four students from AUB contacted me for an interview. During the interview I found out that they were also working on an essay related to a new concept in town: “Friitz“. What’s Friitz, well… this is an international chain of restaurants serving authentic Belgian Fries since 1825.  Wow, I thought. This place was next on my list. I found myself around the area this weekend and decided to stop by for some French fries, I mean Belgium fries.
Friitz_Bliss_Beirut02
Yes, Bliss really boasts a large number of restaurants but one that stands out is Friitz with its flashy yellow colors, facing AUB’s main gate. I first thought that I was entering Classic Burger Joint – the exact same design, the exact same colors and the exact same bar with a view on the street.
The menu:
  • Salads
  • Sandwiches
  • Waffles
  • Drinks
  • Potato world
  • Baked potatoes
  • Friitz poutine
  • Appetizers

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut14

Since their specialty is fries, my friends and I decided to order one of each on their menu. I also added the poutine so I can compare it to the ones I had at Lord of the Wings and Marky’s, a sandwich and to end the tasting session, we ordered their waffles. The French fries come in carton cones, which can easily be enjoyed while walking the streets; the sandwich is nicely wrapped with a branded paper, as for the poutine, it is served in a plastic box and the waffles in a nice carton one.
The French fries at Friitz:
  • Bulgarian: These fries are reddish in color since they are seasoned with paprika, coriander and lemon zest. A local favorite, these fries have an interesting and rich flavor which tickles your tongue

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut24

  • Zesty: Covered with coriander, garlic powder, Parmesan cheese and lemon zest, these fries are gold in color. A bit too dry with a prominent garlic flavor, these were my least favorite

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut27

  • Traditional: I’ll let you in on a secret. These were my favorite. As simple as they are, the rich thick fries perfect cooked and non oily

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut32

  • Cheddar Cheese: These are way too heavy. The layer of cheddar makes it hard for each to be grabbed with your hand and is somehow messy. I would suggest you order the cheese on the side and use as a dip at your convenience

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut29

  • Cajun: I enjoyed the salt and pepper seasoning. But these fires are better served with some dip. I think a Thousand Island is the best choice here

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut43

The sauces are not all good. I liked the cheddar and thousand islands… but the spicy ketchup felt like some bland red sauce you eat with crisps, while the honey mustard has a very prominent strong taste of mayonnaise which takes over the taste of honey.
Moving onto something else, we went for a poutine and a steak sandwich.
  • Poutine: This is a huge big no. Wikipedia can help you understand what a poutine is. I would suggest that you remove it off the menu. Salty, thick, heavy and the gravy covering the cheddar cheese that’s not melted, is not tasty at all. Besides, Cheddar cheese for poutine?

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut44

  • Steak Sandwich: Wrapped in a branded paper and toasted to perfection, we received a perfectly round sandwich that looks mouthwatering. A great first impression. The baguette is awesome, emptied from its bread filling and generously filled with premium ingredients except for its main ingredient, which is the meat; It’s too chewy and dry which only means that it’s of low quality…

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut39

So the fries are good, the sandwiches are acceptable and the poutine should better be removed from the menu. How would dessert be? I can happily say that it was simply delicious.
  • Magritte Waffle: A superb quality of fresh crunchy waffle covered with premium ingredients was enjoyed with a smile. A big piece covered with bananas, chocolate, cream and nuts for $5 only; this is a meal on its own.

Friitz_Bliss_Beirut54

So the experience as Friitz was good but the place lacks some fine-tuning. Although they are tasty and not oily, their fries are not exceptionally unique, since many local brands offer crunchier and tastier fries. I was expecting to be amazed since their main specialty is ‘fries’.

PS:

  • Check the official Friitz website, where you’ll discover a colorful logo and menu. So why copy Classic Burger Joint?
  • The original fries portions look bigger. Bizarre no? Comparing Europe to Lebanon where life is more expensive

All this is fine, but what is so special about this place? Five different seasoning? Or some ready-made sauces? I think that, for this place to sustain itself for a long time, I would suggest that they offer more variety in their fries section. How I see it: For a place that mainly serves fries I would expect: Perfectly cooked fries, a golden color, the possibility of ordering the fries peeled or unpeeled with a choice of ordering them thin of thick – a bigger variety, to sum it up. As for the sandwiches, they are almost close to being good with a few touches here and there.

They say that they have a tasty burger; I would love to hear your experience on that.

Le Camion Qui Fume: Not Worth the Wait

Le Camion Qui Fume… What else. My search for the best burger in Paris wouldn’t have been complete without trying the one and only burger truck, a place many have recommended I try. As the taxi driver stopped, more than fifty meters away from the truck, the grilling smell was so strong and appetizing, that he looked at me and said, “I feel like going down for it with you.” But boy was he lucky he didn’t do so.

Camion_Fume_Burger_Paris_Street_Food03

Parked in the middle of the business area facing mk2 Bibliotheque, smoke coming out from a blue and red truck strikes your attention. The name fits it perfectly well, Le Camion Qui Fume (The Smoking Truck). Although you have to eat while standing the choices are wide.
I stood in line, grabbed my phone and started writing until I realized that I was standing in the wrong spot; the right queue is for ordering and the left one is for picking up your order.
Dozens of students were waiting and looking straight ahead at the grilling process. Four busy youngsters cut, grill, fry and deliver the burger. I was expecting to see some action and fun like they did at Big Fernand but it seems that here is a place where you come to eat and only eat.
Anyway, I waited and my hands were starting to freeze, while the temperature was dropping to 4degrees. “Come on guys, we’re hungry and freezing!”
Camion_Fume_Burger_Paris_Street_Food10
20 minutes after that, it was my turn: “which one do you recommend” I ask the guy with the hat and he suggested I go for the Day’s Special, which is the classic one with chili sauce. So I ordered one with fries and coleslaw, all for 13,70€ and moved on to the next line where I waited another 20 minutes to get my order. I was really hoping that the burger was worth all this hassle.
Smoke and yet more smoke. These guys will smell of burgers for a year…
I received a blue and red paper bag that contained a burger fitted in a carton box and some fries. The burgers looked appetizing, generous and typically American. Before leaving the queue you can add ketchup, mustard or mayo from the big dirty Heinz bottles at the bar.
Searching for an adequate spot to sit and enjoy the burger, I looked for a place with privacy and some light to shoot these precious items – not many people understand my need of taking pictures. While unwrapping, my mouth-watered preparing my taste buds for the best.  And here, was the biggest deception of a meal in Paris…
Camion_Fume_Burger_Paris_Street_Food11
I bite into a hard thick dry and spongy bun that tears apart into chunks like an old loofah. A thick tasteless piece of mix topped with a mix of stale vegetables and a huge piece of onion, which I removed – a mess of a burger. Every bite was half in my mouth while the other half was dry pieces falling apart all over the place. I closed my eyes and tried to feel something, feel the ingredients, understand what’s happening.
The burger I ordered was the chili special of the day, and believe me, I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t pay for it myself; no chili flavor whatsoever, no spiciness… Nothing! A huge deception that made me throw half of it away – trying to avoid empty calories. The cherry on top was the coleslaw salad: Yucky! A dry super cold cabbage salad fitted unappealingly in a plastic box. Pieces of vegetables mixed together with sugar. I didn’t feel any sauce just a strong unpleasant smell of onions. It was even worse than the burger.
The fries, on another hand, are good. Skin on fries, well cooked, golden and crunchy and seasoned with the needed amount of salt.
Camion_Fume_Burger_Paris_Street_Food23
Let’s recap: I paid 20€ to come here, 13€ for this so called burger, 20€ to go back adding to all that a stomach ache. So 53€ to eat or try to eat the most deceiving burger I’ve had in ages. And everyone puts it in the Top10 burgers of the capital? Come on! Please, go taste Big Fernand, La Maison Mere or 231 East St. and discover the huge difference for yourself at the same price.
During my second day in Paris I discovered my favorite burger place at lunch and my least favorite one at dinner. How is this place included in the Top10 lists beats me. Unbelievable!

Rod’s Burgers: Homemade with Style and Perfection

I’m going to start this review by welcoming the first entry to my TOP10 burgers list of 2014… Yes, already… Rod’s Burgers are to die for… Imagine a simple yet innovative burger prepared with love, passion and dedication; a burger that’s tasty, fresh, generous and filled with premium ingredients; and a burger that has it all yet keeps you feeling light, even after devouring three of them – yes, I did… I had to…

Rod's_Burger_Gemmayze_Beirut_Street_Food04

In the heart of Gemmayze, Rodolphe Hobeika has been producing these tasty burgers for more than a year now. He welcomes his guests on the sidewalk of the famous Gemayze street. Find a place to park and the rest is pure enjoyment.

Helped by his fiancee, Rodolphe, with a smile and passion for what he does stands behind the yellow bar waiting for any request from his customers. It was 9pm when I landed in front of their shop and asked to be served with something that will amaze me… and he surely did.

The place is small and fits just two persons. Behind the yellow bar is a grill and a bun oven to your right, while to the left is the working station filled with freshly cut vegetables. A mirror makes the place look twice the size. I sat on one of the four yellow stools and just waited to be served.

Rod's_Burger_Gemmayze_Beirut_Street_Food24

Burgers around here are 100% homemade and prepared fresh in front of the customer. A local organic patty mixed between lamb and cow meat only: No bread crumbs and no eggs. Yes, just pure meat from the local market.

The menu:

  • Appetizers
  • Soft sandwiches
  • Hotdogs
  • Special burgers
  • Burgers
  • Big burgers
  • Light burgers
  • Salads
  • Desserts
  • Add-ons
  • Beverages

My journey started with Rod’s recommendation; The Backboard Burger: 100% organic beef, jalapeños, coleslaw, melted cheese and ham, tomato, caramelized onions, mushrooms and green pepper with special steak sauce. A burger I really enjoyed on all fronts. I loved its soft tender bun provided by Prunelle, the rich juicy yet non fatty meat, the crunchy fresh vegetables and the rich taste of their homemade sauces.

Rod's_Burger_Gemmayze_Beirut_Street_Food28

Eating half of it, I decided to stop and try something else. Rodolphe proposed to create something special for me. He names it the “3a Zaw2ak” burger; a tradition, he says, he is known for, giving clients the green card to create their own burgers depending on their tastes. Let’s call mine the NGNO burger: Bacon, mushrooms, caramelized onions, steak sauce, mozzarella fumes and coleslaw.

This burger is interesting. Rich flavors, sweet taste and a slightly crunchy feel from the coleslaw only adds style to the mix. Inside is a homemade steak sauce like no other, especially created by Rodolphe himself. The best part is the fried aged mozzarella square and the finesse the fresh mushrooms provides. This burger made me smile.

More was yet to come… I was enjoying every bite the max. The well-prepared burgers are so enjoyable, I asked for a third one. Rod went for the big thing: The Brie Burger: 100% organic beef with Brie cheese, bacon, caramelized onions, relish, lettuce, apple with honey mustard, BBQ sauce and strawberry jam. Oh my gosh, what a burger! Superb!

It starts with a crunch followed by a strong equilibration of sweetness between the honey mustard and jam. The crunchiness of the iceberg adds a hint of love while the Brie adds a touch of gourmet to this simple street food sandwich. With all of the above, add two slices of crispy bacon -Perfection. Simply breathtaking! I wouldn’t start with it though if I were you, since its sweetness might trick your mind.

Keep it for last.

I was eating my third burger while waiting for the first one to cool down. Remember the cold meat test? This is a crucial test step for me. Rod’s patty eaten cold simply tastes real meat. No salt, no fat, no oil, no preservatives and most importantly it doesn’t feel like I’m eating ‘kebbeb’ (kafta); just clean and tasty meat. Bravo Rodolphe, you made my day.

The things I loved:

  • Hygiene is at the top of Rod’s list. He doesn’t touch anything with his bare hands; blue gloves are used to prepare and wrap everything
  • Buns are provided by Prunelle
  • The meat is fresh, not salty, not fatty and not synthetic
  • The sauces are made to perfection
  • They serve Coca-Cola
  • Rod’s generosity is breathtaking

I enjoyed a tasty dinner and went back home fulfilled yet not feeling bloated.

Rod’s burgers are a must try: This guy deserves a boost.

Bagelstein: Bagels Are Taking Over Paris

Last year, the French capital saw the rise of the Burger trend… among others. I realized that Paris is opening up to different and more international food bites… and today, I believe it’s bagels. When I tried Stanz, I felt a new trend emerging… and during my last visit came across Bagelstein, a famous New Yorker bagel shop on every corner of the French capital… this means something.
Bagelstein_Bagels_Paris41
Culinary habits have changed around France… The burger hit the capital by storm the French gourmet way, while the Italian pizza also became the talk of the city… Today, bagels, a New Yorker invention is now available on every busy street in the French capital.
Bagelstein – One of the most famous, not to say the most famous bagel shop around is now available by the dozens in Paris. I personally passed in front of six of its locations in a few days… At Bagelstein, bagels are transformed into culinary delicacies. Tuna, salmon, chicken, pastrami, ham, cheese… You name it, can all be stuffed into those fine rolled circles while fresh crunchy vegetables make of them a complete meal.
Bagelstein_Bagels_Paris43
Let’s go in:
  • With a bar to the left, start by placing your order. A welcoming waitress takes your order on a wrapping paper
  • Continue by choosing the type of bread: plain, nature, sesame, topped with cheese, shallots, cereals, puppy seeds and others
  • The bagel is then cut in half and put in the rolling toasting oven
  • While you proceed to payment, the bagels are filled with their main ingredients then stuffed generously with fresh vegetables
  • Look around, many interesting writings will make you smile: “limited consumption quantity is limited to 500 bagels per person per day”
  • You can choose a fitness bagel
  • Avocado and cheddar are charged at 70cents
  • Espresso is 1€ if you buy a menu
  • “Don’t hesitate to ask us if you can pay later, we have a delicious way to refuse it”
  • “This place is reserved to people having a compulsive Desordre for those small pieces of bread with a hole in the middle. Eh need your attention”

While waiting to be served you cannot but notice the mouthwatering display of muffins, each shining gold and covered with rich ingredients. The chocolate and nuts flavored one I tried is exquisite. I also tried the chocolate cookie, although a bit too hard, it’s tasty.

The menu:
  • Bagels (Isidore, hypolite, henriette, leontine, gab, albertine)
  • Nos menus
  • Nos bagels
  • Drinks
  • Breakfast

Bagelstein_Bagels_Paris06

  • Inside a small shop, an industrial feel takes over
  • The bar occupies the left side
  • The right side is where the high tables are fitted in front of a painted wall filled with news cuts and posters
  • Many black chandeliers pend from over the ceiling where metallic ducts hang
  • The menu, displayed over the counter is beautifully drawn on black boards in colorful chalks
  • Potato chips bags are hung behind the cashier
  • Soft drinks are freshly displayed in an open fridge
We ordered four different salty bagels as well as two sweet ones served on small plastic trays. Each bagel is wrapped individually in a plasticized paper.
We Ordered:
  • Gab: Cream Cheese, pastrami, Poivrons rouges marinés, oignons
  • Leontine: Cream Cheese, Saumon fumé, Avocat, Concombres, oignons
  • Hypolite: Cream Cheese, Poulet fumé, Tomates, Cornichons

Bagelstein_Bagels_Paris44

Let’s eat:
  • I would recommend the salmon with avocado. The avocado adds softness and finesse to the mix. An additional juiciness and flavor that blends perfectly well with the salmon.
  • Each bagel is generously filled with fresh vegetables that crunch under your teeth, adding more fun to every bite
  • Each bagel bun is different. Some are crunchy, others soft and tender, depending on their composition. Don’t be quick to judge
  • I personally liked them all. I enjoyed the overall experience at Bagelstein and their tasty bites
  • The muffins are awesome! Soft, tender, moist and full of rich flavors. I loved them
Some things can be better:
  • Very wrong: the same person, wearing gloves and making the bagels, was also getting paid. Food and money don’t blend. Hygienically speaking, this is a no.
  • Chocolate bagel: too hard on the sides and unpleasantly chewy. I didn’t like them. It can be much better, baked with the chocolate filling the empty hole for example?

Fancy a quick lunch, or craving a light bite or seeking to try new flavors, Bagelstein is a place I recommend.

Pret a Manger: Now in Paris… And I Simply Love it

Pret_a_Manger_Paris33

What a lovely concept – I love Pret a Manger. I first came across Pret last year during a visit to London. In my opinion, this place has changed the way we view fast food. You can walk in grab a healthy sandwich, juice, some fruits and walk out… giving a whole new meaning to fast food. While in Paris and facing the hotel, I see ‘Pret’ – wow they are now in France? Pret creates handmade natural food avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the ‘prepared’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today.

Pret_a_Manger_Paris01

I simply love it! A very nice place where fresh food is displayed on shelves and fridges around the restaurant with bags of chips placed in wooden boxes on the floor. The menu includes sandwiches, filled baguettes, soups, salads and coffee. Pret also prepares desserts, such as American muffins, cakes, and croissants. Lately they integrated the fruits station to enjoy more healthy bites.

Pret opened in London in 1986. College friends, Sinclair and Julian, made proper sandwiches avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the ‘prepared’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today. The two of them had woefully little experience in the world of business. They created the sort of food they craved but couldn’t find anywhere else.

Pret_a_Manger_Paris43

Using natural ingredients and avoiding preservatives and obscure chemicals is sacred to Pret. Their sandwiches are freshly made throughout the day in each and every Pret kitchen. This fact is what makes Pret special.

This morning, my wife entered Pret and grabbed three sandwiches as well as some chips, desserts and drinks. The ambiance around the place and the positive vibe will just make you smile. The freshness of colors and design as well as the dedicated staff will make your experience special. I love how every member of staff has a different logo on his apron: “Hot section chef” or “Barista” or “Pret Team”.

Pret a manger in few lines:

  • The place is perfectly well lit
  • They serve fresh, quick, healthy, delicious, creative, aromatic and read to devour items
  • Easy to use: Walk in front of the fridge and grab your favorite items. They can be toasted and heated depending on what you like
  • The packaging is so innovative and creative. You have to see it to understand
  • Salty, sweet, cold or hot… I loved everything I ate
  • Pret has its own soft drink brand and natural canned juices
Let’s eat and enjoy:
  • Scottish Smoked Salmon: Malted wholegrain bread, Scottish smoked salmon, lemon juice, butter, Pret special seasoning) Awesome. Inside the crunchy fresh bread is the ingredients layered one on top of the other, butter, non-oily and premium salmon and some greenery. The sandwich has an interesting Wasabi flavor and a nice subtle sweetness aftertaste

Pret_a_Manger_Paris28

  • Chicken Sesame Sushi Wrap: Tortilla wrap, British chicken, nori, broccoli, red pepper, ginger, spinach, sesame seeds, roasted sesame dressing… This super-tasty, super-crunchy wrap comes with a Far Eastern touch.  Roasted sesame dressing covering flame grilled flat bread covered with a sheet of roasted nori roll. Inside is a rich mix of sushi ginger, red pepper and charred long stem broccoli. Like biting in a maki wrap explodes the flavors of Japan followed by a rich filling combining sweetness and freshness. The crunchiness of the lettuce, the softness of the chicken and the red peppers with tasty sesame sauce. Delicious

Pret_a_Manger_Paris25

  • Vegetable Crisps: Thinly sliced carrots, beetroot and parsnip, fried until crispy and popped in a bag with a hint of salt. Real vegetable flavors of vegetables with their heavenly crunch

Pret_a_Manger_Paris27

  • Sea salt & Cider vinegar: Potatoes, sunflower oil, maldon sea salt, cider vinegar seasoning

Pret_a_Manger_Paris44

  • Chocolate Mousse: A plastic cup containing layers – a degradation of colors starting with the dark chocolate, then a layer of milk chocolate, topped off with a final layer of sour cream. Pure indulgence!

Pret_a_Manger_Paris30

  • Red Fruits Muffin: Imagine a delicious blueberry muffin with blueberry compote filling. It’s quite incredible how much blueberries can be packed into this muffin. Add to that the healthy factor as it is loaded with hundreds of seeds and cereals. You have to see to believe. Moist and tasty, this muffin is superb!

Pret_a_Manger_Paris47

  • Avocado and Pine seeds wrap: Tortilla wrap, avocado, freshly sliced cucumber, freshly sliced cucumber, freshly sliced tomatoes, whole leaf spinach, Italian matured cheese, sprinkling of pine nuts

Pret_a_Manger_Paris45

  • Orange drink, 100 Cal: Orange, raisins and mandarin
While sitting on the sidewalk and enjoying my sandwiches, one of the employees passed by distributing water bottles to everyone. How cute was that!
Next time I’m in Paris, I’ll surely visit Pret again. The experience, setup and of course the food were just great!
